Although there are many online sources for MP3 files, you might have found a nice video on YouTube that you would like to use on your MP3 player or mobile phone. Converting a YouTube video to MP3 is easy if you have the right tools.

To convert a YouTube video, you first need to download the video to your local hard disk. Then you can convert the downloaded video to a music file in MP3 format.

There are many tools available for downloading YouTube videos, and there are even more tools for converting video to audio. But in this example we will use a popular tool called YouTube Downloader, which is a tool that can do both, download a YouTube video AND convert the downloaded video to an audio file.

You can download the YouTube Downloader software from the Biennesoft website. It is just a 3 MB download, and you can install it by running the downloaded .exe file. Once installed, start the application.

Download YouTube videos

The first step is to copy / paste the YouTube video URL in the text field. Change the download location if you want using the folder icon. Then change the Download Options to select the video quality, although the default is Best Available, which should be fine in most cases.

Make sure the Download video from YouTube radio button is selected and click Ok to start the video download. You will need to provide or confirm the download location and file name. The default is video.mp4, which we leave as is for now. Click Save to start downloading.

Note: The downloaded video file can be large, so make sure you have sufficient space available. The example uses a 7:37 minute video, which results in a 34 MB file.

When the download completes, we need to convert the MP4 video file to a MP3 file. As mentioned, this can also be done with YouTube Downloader.

Convert video to MP3 file

First, select the video file we just downloaded. You can click the button to select the folder and video file. Next we need to change the selected radio button to Convert video (previously downloaded) from file.

Although the program supports quite a few different output formats, we select MPEG Audio Layer 3 (MP3), and click the Ok button to start the conversion.

This will bring up the MP3 output quality window:

MP3 quality configuration

The default selection is Medium, which produces a 128 Kbps MP3 file. You can change this to Low, Optimal or High depending on your needs. The resulting sample rate is 96 Kbps, 192 Kbps, and 256 Kbps respectively. Keep in mind that the file size of the resulting MP3 file will increase if you select a better quality. The High quality option will produce a MP3 file that is twice the size as the Medium quality option.

The volume of the audio in the resulting MP3 file can also be adjusted. If you need more volume, increase the setting, but in most cases the default setting will do fine.

The last thing to do is click Ok, which will start the actual conversion.

When done, the program will show a completion message.

The resulting MP3 file is 7 MB for the 7:37 minute video, which can now be transferred to a MP3 player.

As mentioned, the YouTube Downloader can convert YouTube videos to various formats. Other output formats supported are Apple QuickTime (.MOV), Iphone video (.MP4), PSP (.MP4), Cell Phone (.3gp), Windows Media Format (.WMV), Xvid (.AVI), and even a manual configuration.

So there you go, whether you want a new ringtone or just want to load some new music to your MP3 player, now you can get it from YouTube!
