Voice over IP (VOIP) calls are rather common these days, and there are many programs supporting VOIP calls. Most chat programs like Live Messenger, Yahoo Messenger, and Google Talk all cater to VOIP calling but one of the first programs with really good quality audio was Skype. Due to this, Skype has become, more or less, the de facto VoIP calling system, with many handsets directly supporting Skype calls.

If you are using Skype, one of the options you might be missing is recording a conversation. Let me emphasize that you should always inform the other party that you are recording a conversation! However, if you do want to record voice conversations with Skype, there is a solution.

The program you can use to record voice calls in Skype is called MP3 Skype Recorder, and it is completely free! All you need to do is download the MP3 Skype Recorder zip file, open it and install the program.

Once you start the program, you will see a simple interface:

Record Skype voice calls

You can change the location where the recorded conversations are stored using the folder button. By default, recorded voice calls will be stored in the user folder. The program also has an option to automatically start when Windows starts.

Once you start Skype, it will ask you for access from MP3 Skype Recorder. Make sure you click Allow access to ensure MP3 Skype Recorder can access Skype to record conversations.

Allow access to Skype

You can now close the MP3 Skype Recorder window. The program will remain active and can be accessed in the notification area of the taskbar. The program has a small popup menu where you can control the recording status, which is on by default.

Any conversation you now have using Skype is recorded automatically and saved as an MP3 file in the specified location.
