The following steps will enable you to find your audio device brand.

In the Windows Start menu, type “devmgmt.msc” and press Enter. This will start the Windows Device Manager.

Scroll down to the Sound, video and controllers category and then click the “+” sign.

Most of the time the brand of your sound card will be shown in the device name. If not, for example when it is listed as a generic High Definition Audio Device, you can right-click the device, and select Properties in the popup menu.

Next, select the Details tab, and in the list of properties, select Manufacturer.

Sound card brand

When it says Microsoft, as in the example shown, it might still not be the exact brand of the audio device. The reason is that the driver can show the brand as Microsoft when a default Windows audio driver is used.

The only way to check the actual audio device brand is to check the Hardware Ids property. In the example below we see that the vendor ID (VEN_xxxx in the hardware id strings) is equal to VEN_10EC, which is Realtek.

You can search for the vendor ID string to find the exact manufacturer for your audio device, and then look up the drivers, or check program compatibility for your sound card.
